The best time to visit Peru for most trips is May to September, the dry season in the Andes and the Amazon. Prices peak in June to August, so the value sweet spot is May and September. The wet season, roughly November to March, is cheaper but brings heavy rain in the highlands, and Lima’s coast has its own reverse pattern. This guide prices each season, covers Machu Picchu timing and flags the dates when rates spike. Price levels are relative, so check live rates.
Best time to visit Peru by month
Peru has three climate zones: the desert coast, the Andes and the Amazon. The table follows the Cusco and Machu Picchu highlands, with notes on the coast. Price level is a relative index (Low, Mid, High) for flights, rooms and tours together.
| Month | Weather (Andes) | Price level | Crowds | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | Wet, cloudy, muddy trails | Low | Light | Cheap, trek risk |
| February | Wettest; Inca Trail closes | Low | Light | Skip for trekking |
| March | Rain easing, still wet | Low | Light | Good for deals, mixed weather |
| April | Drying, green hills | Low to Mid | Moderate, Easter busy | Strong value outside Easter |
| May | Dry, clear, cool mornings | Mid | Moderate | Best value overall |
| June | Dry, cold nights | High | Heavy | Great weather, peak price |
| July | Dry, clearest skies | High | Heaviest | Book far ahead |
| August | Dry, windy, busy | High | Heavy | Pay more or skip |
| September | Dry, warming | Mid | Moderate | Excellent value |
| October | Showers start | Mid to Low | Moderate | Good value, some rain |
| November | Wetter, afternoon storms | Low | Light | Cheap, mixed weather |
| December | Wet, Lima sunny | Mid to High late month | Busy at year end | Coast yes, highlands wet |
On the coast, Lima is sunniest from about December to April and grey and damp for much of the rest of the year. The Wikivoyage entry for Peru covers the regions in more detail.
Pay more for / save on by season
Pay more for
- Machu Picchu tickets and treks booked early in June to August. Entry is controlled and Inca Trail permits sell out well ahead, so the premium is for certainty. Waiting can mean no slot at all.
- Altitude time in Cusco. An extra night or two before any high trek costs little and reduces the chance of lost days. It is one of the better value upgrades.
- Flexible domestic flights in the wet season. Highland flights can be delayed by weather, so refundable fares and a spare day protect connections.
Save on
- Shoulder-month rooms in Cusco and the Sacred Valley. April, May, September and October rates sit below peak, often noticeably.
- Buses and shared transfers. Long-distance buses in Peru are cheap and varied in quality, so compare operators on safety and comfort, not just fare.
- Set-menu lunches. A lunch menu of several courses costs a fraction of dinner in tourist areas, all year.
The best value window for Peru
Pick May or September. Dry-season weather has arrived, trails and viewpoints are clear, and the June to August rush is a few weeks away or already over. April and October are cheaper still, with more rain risk.

If your trip is mostly the coast and desert, such as Lima, Paracas and the Nazca area, the timing flips: December to April is warmer and sunnier there.
Total cost box
- Value window (May, September): a mid-range traveller might plan on roughly $70 to $150 per person per day for rooms, food, local transport and entry fees, as of 2026. Machu Picchu entry, train and guides add to that.
- Peak (June to August, Christmas): the same trip can run 20 to 40 percent higher, especially for the Cusco area.
- Not included: international flights, insurance, treks and permits. Check entry requirements with the official source before you book.
Months to skip in Peru
- February. It is the wettest month in the highlands, and the Inca Trail closes for maintenance each year. Landslides can also disrupt roads and rail.
- July and August if you are on a budget. The weather is superb, but so are the prices and queues. I would book May or September instead.
- December to March for a Cusco trek. Mud, cloud and storms make views unreliable. If you go, choose a lower-altitude cultural route.
- June to November for the Lima coast. Not a skip, but expect grey skies and cool damp air, so beach plans are weak.

When to book Peru flights, treks and rooms
| Item | Peak (Jun to Aug) | Shoulder (Apr, May, Sep, Oct) | Wet (Nov to Mar) |

| Machu Picchu entry and trains | Book as early as dates open, often months ahead | Book 1 to 3 months out | Usually available closer in |
| Inca Trail permits | Often sell out many months ahead | Book 4 to 6 months out | Trail closed in February |
Rules for tickets, circuits and time slots change, so confirm them on the official booking site before you pay a tour operator for them.
Peru events that spike prices

Inti Raymi
The Cusco winter solstice festival on 24 June is the city’s biggest event. Rooms sell out and rates climb, and the whole of June is already peak season.
Fiestas Patrias
Independence holidays on 28 and 29 July fall in peak season, so Peruvians also travel. Domestic buses and flights get tight, and rooms in Lima and Cusco cost more.
Semana Santa
Holy Week is a major religious and travel period, with processions in Cusco and Ayacucho. Domestic travel and rooms get busy, and the date moves between March and April.
Qoyllur Rit’i
This pilgrimage near Cusco usually takes place in late May or June, depending on the calendar. It draws large crowds to the area and can affect transport and rooms near the route.
Carnival and Candelaria
Carnival in February and the Virgen de la Candelaria festival in Puno bring big crowds and higher rates. The Puno festival is a significant cultural event, so book early if you want to attend.
Señor de los Milagros
The Lima procession in October turns streets purple and draws large crowds. It has a modest price effect, mostly through central rooms and busy roads.
Best time to visit Peru FAQ
What is the cheapest time to visit Peru?
January to March is typically the lowest-priced period for rooms and tours in the highlands, but it is also the wettest. November is cheap too. For savings with better weather, aim for April or October.
When is the best time to visit Machu Picchu?
May and September give clear weather with smaller crowds than June to August. The dry season runs roughly May to September. Book entry ahead for any month, and remember the Inca Trail closes in February.
Is Peru worth visiting in the rainy season?
Yes, for lower prices and green scenery, if you accept disruption. Landslides and flooding can block roads and rail. The coast and Lima are sunnier then. Keep flexible bookings and spare days.
When is the best time to visit the Amazon in Peru?
The drier months, roughly June to November, are generally easier for walking and boat trips. The wet season brings higher rivers and more rain, which can help for some wildlife viewing. Prices tend to rise in July and August.
How many days do I need in Peru?
Plan 10 to 14 days to combine Lima, Cusco and Machu Picchu with one more region. A week suits Cusco and the Sacred Valley alone. Our Peru travel guide maps routes, and Wikipedia gives the background.
