Why visit Hyderabad

If you are searching for things to do in Hyderabad, expect a layered city. It is the capital of the Indian state of Telangana, founded in 1591 by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, later ruled by the Mughals and then by the Asaf Jahi dynasty, known as the Nizams. The Nizams made it the capital of a princely state until 1948.

That history is visible in its monuments, palaces, mosques and bazaars. The city sits on the Deccan Plateau around the Musi River and several artificial lakes, including Hussain Sagar. Locals sometimes call it the Pearl City.

Today it is also a major technology centre, so older neighbourhoods sit beside modern districts. For visitors, that means heritage by day and strong food and shopping by night. It is large and busy, with heavy traffic, so give yourself time between sights and plan each day around one part of town.

Top things to do in Hyderabad

Charminar

The four-minaret monument is the symbol of the old city and sits among busy lanes of bazaars. Allow about an hour for the structure and longer for the surrounding market. Go early to avoid crowds and heat, and check current rules for climbing the monument.

Golconda Fort

This large hilltop fort, associated with the Qutb Shahi dynasty, sits west of the city centre. Plan two to three hours to walk the ramparts and climb to the top for views. Wear good shoes, take water and check whether an evening light show is running.

Laad Bazaar and the old city markets

The streets around Charminar are known for bangles, pearls and fabrics. Bargaining is normal. Allow one to two hours, keep valuables secure, and be aware that crowds are heavy, especially around festivals.

Chowmahalla Palace

This former Nizam palace complex in the old city has courtyards, halls and displays that show how the rulers lived. It takes about two hours. Check opening days and ticket rules, as they change.

Hussain Sagar Lake

The large lake lies between Hyderabad and Secunderabad. A road runs along one side, and you can take a boat trip to see the large Buddha statue on an island. Allow an hour or two, and visit near sunset for cooler air.

Hyderabadi biryani and local food

The city is famous for its biryani, plus kebabs, haleem in season and Irani chai. Try a few places rather than one. Ask locals for current favourites, and take care with street food if you have a sensitive stomach.

Qutb Shahi Tombs

Near Golconda, a group of domed tombs sits in landscaped grounds. It is a calmer stop than the old city and takes about an hour. Combine it with the fort to save time on transport.

Best time to visit Hyderabad

Hyderabad is hot and dry for much of the year. Summer, roughly March to June, can be very hot, and it is the least comfortable time for sightseeing. The monsoon from about June to September brings humid weather and heavy showers, but the city turns greener. Winter, from about October to February, is the most pleasant, with warm days and cooler evenings.

If you travel in summer, start early and rest at midday. Major festivals and public holidays fill hotels and trains, so book ahead.

Season Weather Crowds and prices
Summer (Mar-Jun) Very hot and dry Fewer visitors, lower prices
Monsoon (Jun-Sep) Humid, heavy showers Moderate
Winter (Oct-Feb) Warm days, cooler nights Busiest, higher prices

How to get to Hyderabad and around

Most visitors fly into Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, which is south-west of the centre and has domestic and international connections. Allow around an hour or more for the road transfer, depending on traffic.

Hyderabad is also well connected by rail, with long-distance trains using stations in the city and in Secunderabad. Buses link it with other cities in Telangana and neighbouring states. Check schedules and book rail tickets early for popular routes.

Inside the city, a metro line covers parts of the main corridors, and local buses, auto-rickshaws and ride-hailing apps fill the gaps. Traffic can be slow, so allow generous time. Metered taxis and app-based rides are usually easier than negotiating fares. Agree prices before getting into an unmetered vehicle.

Where to stay in Hyderabad

The old city around Charminar suits those who want to be steps from the bazaars and food, though rooms are simpler and the streets are crowded and noisy. It works for a short stay focused on heritage.

The central areas around Hussain Sagar and Secunderabad have a wide choice of hotels, with easier road and rail access. They suit first-time visitors who want a balance of access and comfort.

Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills are upscale residential districts with restaurants, cafes and boutique hotels. They suit travellers who prefer calmer streets and more polished dining.

The western tech districts have business-style hotels, useful if you have work there, but they are a long drive from the heritage areas.

How many days do you need?

Two days will cover the headline sights, and three allows for slower exploration and a day of food and shopping. If you add nearby excursions, allow four. Avoid cramming several large monuments into one hot afternoon.

  1. Day 1: Charminar and Laad Bazaar in the morning, lunch of biryani, then Chowmahalla Palace.
  2. Day 2: Golconda Fort early, the Qutb Shahi Tombs, then a late afternoon at Hussain Sagar.
  3. Day 3: Museums, cafes in Banjara Hills, and shopping for pearls and fabrics.
