Why visit Cozumel

The best things to do in Cozumel centre on the water. It is an island and municipality in the Caribbean Sea off the eastern coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, opposite Playa del Carmen. The Cozumel Channel separates it from the mainland, and in 2023 the Mexican government designated it a Pueblo Magico.

Diving is the main draw. If you prefer long white sandy beaches, nearby destinations such as Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Isla Mujeres may suit you better. Cozumel suits visitors who want reefs, a relaxed island pace and friendly local services.

The island has a long history. More than 30 archaeological sites have been identified, and Cozumel flourished from about 1250 CE as an important port and pilgrimage centre. Its name is derived from a Mayan phrase meaning island of swallows.

Scuba diving the reefs

The diving is what draws many visitors. Trips usually run in half-day outings, with two dives per trip. Choose a licensed operator, check conditions, and confirm your certification level. Currents can be strong on some sites, so listen carefully to the briefing.

Snorkelling

If you do not dive, snorkelling tours reach the reefs by boat and take a few hours. Some beaches offer snorkelling from shore. Wear reef-safe sunscreen, and do not touch the coral.

San Miguel town

The island’s main town has a waterfront promenade, shops and restaurants. Allow a couple of hours to stroll. It is busiest when cruise ships are in port, so check the schedule and go early or in the evening.

Maya sites on the island

Dozens of archaeological sites have been recorded on Cozumel, though few are developed for visitors. Check which sites are open and what you can see before you go. A half day is usually enough for one or two.

Beach clubs and swimming

Beach clubs on the island provide chairs, food and calm water for a relaxing day. Costs and rules vary, so check entry fees and whether you need to buy food and drinks.

Driving or cycling around the island

The island has a coastal road, and a loop is a popular way to see quieter beaches and viewpoints. Plan half a day. Rent a car, scooter or bicycle from a trusted shop, and carry water and sun protection.

Marine park and reef areas

Parts of the reef system are protected, and some areas have rules on landing, fishing and visitor numbers. Follow local guidance, and check current access rules with your tour operator.

Best time to visit Cozumel

The driest and most comfortable weather generally runs from about December to April. This is also high season for cruise ships, with up to half a dozen large ships a day in port, so the town and some beaches can be busy.

Summer and early autumn are hotter and more humid, and the Caribbean hurricane season generally runs into the autumn. Prices can drop, and the island is quieter, but you should keep your plans flexible and check forecasts and cancellation terms. Diving conditions are generally good for much of the year.

Season Weather Crowds and prices
December to April Warm, drier Busiest, higher prices
May to June Hot, more humid Moderate
July to November Hot, wet, storm risk Quieter, cheaper

How to get to Cozumel and around

Cozumel International Airport receives direct flights from several North American cities, plus regional flights from Mexico City. Check current routes. Many travellers also fly into Cancun or Tulum, which have more connections, then continue by road to Playa del Carmen.

From Playa del Carmen, a passenger ferry crosses the channel to the island in a short time. Check schedules and buy tickets from the terminal or an official seller. A shared van from the Cancun airport to Playa del Carmen is a common option, but compare prices.

On the island, taxis are common and the town is walkable. Many visitors rent a car, scooter or bike to explore, so check insurance and rules before you do.

Where to stay in Cozumel

San Miguel, the main town, suits visitors who want restaurants, shops and easy access to ferries and dive shops. It is lively, and cruise days can be busy, so check the exact location.

Along the coast just outside town, many hotels cater to divers with easy access to boats and the sea. They suit those who plan to spend most days on the water and are happy to use taxis for dinner.

Resorts further out along the shore suit travellers who want a more secluded feel, with beach access and facilities on site. You will rely on taxis or a rental vehicle to get around. Compare prices between seasons.

How many days do you need?

Three days gives you time for a full day of diving or snorkelling, a stroll through San Miguel and an island loop. Four days leaves room for a second reef trip or a slower pace. Two days works if you are mainly there to dive.

  1. Day 1: A morning dive or snorkel trip, then a relaxed afternoon in San Miguel.
  2. Day 2: Drive or cycle around the island, with stops at quiet beaches and viewpoints.
  3. Day 3: A second reef trip, or a visit to a Maya site and a beach club.

Day trips and nearby

Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen is the mainland ferry port, with a busy pedestrian street and long beaches. It is a short ferry ride away and works as a half-day or full-day trip.

Tulum

Tulum is known for its coastal Maya ruins and beaches. Reaching it from the island means a ferry and a road trip, so it is a long day, and better combined with an overnight stay.

Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres is another Caribbean island, near Cancun. It requires travel back to the mainland first, so plan it as a separate stop.

Cancun

Cancun has many flights and a large resort zone. Most visitors pass through it, and it makes more sense as a gateway than a day trip.
